I don’t find a translation feature in the theme customizer. Is there an option to translate the elements of the website (into german)? Or do I need a plugin for this?

Could I also use WPML? Editing the pot file sounds complicated.
Yes, you can use WPML but you need a license of WPML.
I highly recommend to use Loco Translator, we have made various sites with this plugin. Works perfectly.
