I suggest you to use any order plugin (custom post type order plugin), you can choose yourself the order of portfolio items.

Hi, I’ve tried using “Custom Post Type Order” and “Simple Page Ordering” but only allow you to sort the pages; not the elements of the portfolio.
Is it not possible to fix the template for the items appear sorted by publication date? (I think it’s logical)
We suggest you to use ‘Post Types Order’ plugin, we have used it to order portfolio items.
