How do I add a link to a logout or login in the menu that recognizes when a user is either logged in or logged out? In other words. If this is not possible, how would I just add the word “login” to the menu so a person knows how to log in to the website?

You can use a plugin to incorporate the registration of users module. To just add a login item in the menu, go to Appearance > Menu and add a custom menu item.
