I am trying to add menu Items but I am not sure if I am doing it right. How exactly does adding menu items work.

You can add them just like any other wordpress theme. From Appearance > Menus. or you can use the Customizer > Menus, select your menu and open it to add more items or edit the current ones. See screenshot: https://postimg.cc/image/u81s6cntj/
