I’m having difficulty with this feature within Specular. In the Specular options, the default layout for a post page is set to content with right hand sidebar (not full width, not left sidebar) but on some of the posts I’d like to have a full width layout for the individual post details.

The option to overwrite the default post layout is available in the WordPress back office for individual posts in ‘Post Options’ just above the Publish box. Switching this to ‘On’ and changing the layout to fullwidth does not have any effect.
Sorry for the inconvenience. But you can change single post layout only in General Options > Blog Config > Single Post Layout. The developer team is already notified about it and we’ll fix this in the next theme update.
Yes, this feature is available only for pages. I can not tell just yet, by certain when will the next update released. You will get notified for it via email.
