I have just purchased your Specular theme for my business. After playing around with it for a few days I got to the portfolio section. I am trying to add layers to the portfolio icons such as one “square” leads to a subcategory of several other product “squares”, but it directly leads to the final page. With the amount of products the company I am making the website for, I need several layers to properly organise the entire portfolio range.

Can you please be more specific on the changes you want to make to theme? By default the portfolio page, shows the categories bar at the top or at the side(depending on the portfolio style selected). But it does not have an option to show categories with sub-menu (sub-categories).
So you either will add your sub-categories to that bar (screenshot), or create new pages where a portfolio element with the given sub-category will display.
