I think you have translated them wrong. The french version is not linked to it’s english version. I created a test portfolio item and translated it. Both versions are ok. The steps to follow:
-create item;
-At the right panel, click on the option to create an english version;
-in the new created item, copy content from it’s equivalent in francais, translate and save.
