I trief it again. Same problem as before. Furthermore i followed your steps by deactivating the plugin, deleting the plugin. However the message doesnt’show up on required plugins. So now i’m stuck without the plugin.

Here are all my steps:

1. Filezilla, backup specular theme folder.
2. Delete specular theme folder
3. Upload new specular theme files
4. Login WP backend
5. Deactivate VC plugin
6. Delete VC plugin
7. No message, sign in, sign out still nothing.

I tried the following work-around:

1. Log into WP backend
2. Navigate to Envato Toolkit
3. Tab ‘Themes’
4. Click on install plugins (this show you the required plugins.)
5. However the WPBakery Visual Composer can’t install because of the following error:
   1. Can’t copy file: <span style=”color: #444444; font-family: ‘Open Sans’, sans-serif; line-height: 19.5px; background-color: #f1f1f1;”>/web/wp-content/plugins/js_composer/assets/lib/bower/nivoslider/themes/default/bullets.png</span>

Is this working now or not? I have been held up for three days now and re-installed the theme every time it’s suggested… Waiting for confirmation that it is operative.

For me it isn’t..

I have (July 14) downloaded and uploaded the new theme, just /specular/ .  I didn’t touch my purchased version of VC 4.6.1, already installed on my WP.  It is working again, from what I can see.  Stacking is gone, menu is normal.

Hi Ruco, Thanks! The website is back online now. I added the custom CSS and the menu is fixed now.

May i ask how you fixed it, i want to be able to fix it myself whenever a new update comes out. Also what do you mean by the design option issue? Everything seems cool right now.

Just updated the theme (tried installing it twice via TFP) and now my website isn’t working. :( No idea how to disable or delete the visual composer, but don’t know if that’s even related.

I just found a way to get the updated version of VC, but we have to pay for it now? So basically, if we don’t pay for this plug-in UPDATE (even if we already had it installed), our whole website is useless? I’m SO confused.

It seems the only way to update Visual Composer to 4.6.2 is through CodeCanyon, meaning we need to purchase and download the plugin in order to obtain the license key. Is this correct?

@Jameson, the last update of the theme had included the latest version of Visual Composer at the time of it’s release. The next plugin update will be with the theme again. If you wish to have it earlier than that, then you have to buy it.

Just a tip in case someone has the same problem as mine:

If you follow the steps of uninstalling the Visual Composer plugin and the message that the plugin is required didn’t pop up, double check if you are using the child theme. If so, activate the main theme, the message will pop-up, install and activate it, and go back to your child theme.

I’ve updated VC and now have issues with the portfolios :

The porfolios exsits and you can see them on the porfolio HP (eg screen shot) bur you can’t access ti the portfolio itself ( 404 error).

Could you please tell me how to fix it ASAP?

You do not need a licence number to update Visual Composer. Just delete it’s folder (wp-content/plugins/js_composer) and go back to your dashboard. Re-install plugin from wp.

But when I click on the button “open design options” WordPress is telling me:

“You don’t have enough rights for this page” (translated it from Dutch, don’t know the exact message in English)

You can delete plugin folder directly from the plugins folder. Access it from your ftp. Find and delete this folder: wp-content/plugins/vc_composer

Hi, after trying a couple of things (that I found here), I’m still unable to get the Visual Composer to work/show.

I’m working with the Tower theme. First, I activated another theme so I would be able to deactivate and delete the current Visual Composer (otherwise that’s not possible). I logged out and back in to the WP-admin between each step. After deleting the VC and activating Tower theme again, I got the message that it needed to install VC. After an ‘install successful’ message, it’s still the same – not showing me the Visual Composer part on pages that I open for editing.

At some point, I thought simply buying a Visual Composer license would make a difference but seeing the issue I and other have with it, I’m not sure it will make any difference. If it would make a difference, please let me know. I won’t be happy to spend money on something that’s already part of an existing theme but at least I can continue working on my client’s site.

What theme version do you have? If you did not update theme to it’s latest version, then most probably you are installing over and over the same VC version that does not work.
So please make sure to have updated theme first. Download the latest copy from your Envato account. And then perform the VC update. If you still have issues, open up a new topic and send us the credentials in a private reply.

that worked great, thank you so much. After activating another theme, I didn’t see an option to delete the existing Tower theme so I did that via FTP. Everything else worked out fine. VC is back up and running.

Today I discovered that Visual Composer is no longer working on my site, so I attempted to update via FTP, taking care to follow the steps outlined on this site. However, once I updated the theme, my site’s styles were completely broken, and most content didn’t show up at all. So, I reverted back to the previous version and attempted to update Visual Composer following your guide, but the message that is supposed to prompt me to install VC does not appear.

Now my site is broken and uneditable. My site gets quite a bit of traffic, so I need to fix this ASAP. What can I do to fix this issue?

If you have an older version of theme, even if you do delete Visual Composer from ftp and attempt to install it again.. you will have the same version again. That’s because it will install the included vc in your theme, which is the old VC and it will give the same problem.
Long story short, you either have to update theme and then update Visual Composer, or send us your wp and ftp credentials and we will install the latest one for you. So you won’t need to necessarily update theme (although it is strongly recommended that you do!).

As I noted in my post, I did update Specular to the latest version. Once it was updated, my site was broken. My styles, colors, and elements were broken, missing, and otherwise incorrect. I have not customized any of the code, so I’m not sure why.

However, I wanted to be sure that I didn’t do something wrong, so I just now updated the theme again. This time, Visual Composer is completely missing. I followed the steps to update the theme via FTP, and I did not do anything incorrectly. VC is missing, and my site is still mostly broken.

I am having issues with the Visual Composer update as well. I have updated the theme and the plugin as recommended but when I click on a row to edit it, the dialogue appears but the settings in the dialogue are for adding  a Youtube video?

Other edits I am trying to perform open the wrong dialogue or an empty dialogue or a correct dialogue with no content.

I have deleted and reinstalled the plugin several times but it doesn’t make any difference?

At the moment I am unable to edit my site, I need help to fix this.

I just updated to Specular version 2.0 and Visual Composer 4.12. However the alignment of rows is all wrong now. Is there a solution:

I have the latest version of the theme and wordpress on my site but am having issues with visual composer.

For some reason, I cannot delete the VC plug in. I have tried to delete this directly off word press dashboard and also, manually through the FTP but couldn’t find the VC plugin directory under the plugins directory.

Why do you want to delete WP bakery plugin? It is an essential plugin for this theme. Anyway, please go to your wp-content/plugins folder using a ftp connection. Find and delete folder “js_composer“.
